Although teens can get a learner’s permit when they are just 15
years old, some parents might wish to wait. In any case, all parents
need to require training, both on the road and in the classroom.
Studies show that younger drivers take more risks and engage in
dangerous driving situations more often. This risky behavior
includes:
- Passing in a no-pass zone
- Talking on their cell phone, eating, putting on make-up, and
otherwise being distracted while driving
Even if your child is the best driver in the world, he or she may take
part in these risky behaviors because of peer pressure. Often, new
drivers have friends in the car, encouraging them to drive faster or
otherwise break the rules of the road.
Inexperience also plays a role. Even the most responsible teen drivers
may have not been in situations that require quick thinking. Remember,
there are other people on the road as well. By requiring that they take
a teen driving school class, parents can help their teens be better
prepared for driving.
